The award was presented to Drs Hayden Marcollo and Andrew Potts, Executive Directors of AMOG Technologies Pty Ltd, at the AIRG Southern Region Meeting and Dinner on 18 October, for development of longitudinally grooved suppression (LGS®) technology for offshore drilling risers.
LGS technology is a patented geometry that reduces drag and fatigue on deepwater drilling risers (the pipes that connect the subsea well to the surface drilling rig).
Founded in 1991, AMOG is a wholly Australian owned company with offices in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and international offices in Houston, Bogota), London and Kuala Lumpur.
AMOG describes itself as a leading global engineering solutions provider to the defence, civil maritime, oil and gas, mining and transport sectors.
AMOG says LGS® is a new technology for the marine offshore oil and gas industry. It employs a novel surface geometry, reducing drag on slender structural elements in current flows, without sacrificing buoyancy. It has the potential to save oil and gas operators an estimated USD$12 million per rig through increased uptime due to some 30 per cent reduction in drag forces on drilling risers. It is now being commercially manufactured and the first modules have recently been deployed in the Gulf of Mexico.
Ken Mirams, AIRG President, said that AMOG’s open approach and commitment to innovation in R&D had seen the company remain competitive in the market and increase its opportunities through expansion into new markets.
This exemplified what AIRG looked for in awarding the AIRG Medal.
This award was presented to Dr Roger Lumley, Mr Geoff Bell and Mr Sam Bell of AW Bell Pty Ltd at the AIRG Southern Region Meeting and Dinner in Melbourne last night (22 October), for development of an ABE casting process for Advanced Aerospace Castings.
Working with CSIRO, through the Researchers in Business Program, the AW Bell team developed the Aluminium Billet Equivalent (ABE) process – a revolutionary new approach to investment casting.
Approximately five years after initiating this new direction, AW Bell has gone from being a successful local company, to being an exporter of high-quality cast parts to Europe, Asia and North America. Innovative thinking, processes and technology together with a clear company vision have spearheaded this change.

In 2013 AW Bell was named the Victorian Manufacturer of the Year, a Victorian Government initiative which salutes excellence in manufacturing. It was commended for its innovation in manufacturing, quality management, sustainable practices, export record and enabling technologies.

AIRG Member Dr Elaine Saunders of Blamey & Saunders Hearing Pty Ltd has been announced as a winner in The Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Awards for 2015. Dr Saunders has been recognised in the Innovation category for her contribution to hearing aid development, research and education.

Michael Egan, from the SME Engagement Centre has won the prestigious AIRG Medal for Australasian Technological Innovation, awarded by the Australasian Industrial Research Group.
This award was presented to Mr Egan at the AIRG 50th Anniversary Meeting last night (24 February 2015), for establishing an operational model and service to boost collaboration between SMEs and research organisations to increase corporate competitiveness.
Mr Egan leads a team of five research facilitators meeting with some 500 Australian SMEs each year to explore their business innovation needs and provide tailored support and advice.
They facilitate research projects that are led by the SME and involving the placement of a researcher inside the business, achieving its highest-ever number of placements in 2014 – 48 projects worth more than $4.5 million.
The winning nomination says Mr Egan “has shown an excellent understanding of the motivations of public sector researchers and SME entrepreneurs, in order to build relationships between these two groups and deliver mutually beneficial outcomes” providing answers to “key challenges in Australia’s capacity to boost commercial returns from research through knowledge diffusion into Australian SMEs”.
AIRG President Dr Leonie Walsh FTSE said collaboration between publicly funded research organisations and industry was critical to knowledge diffusion and ensuring that the nation’s investment in research translates into productivity improvements and new competencies that increase our national prosperity.
“The competitiveness of the SME sector in particular is critical to this ambition,” she said.
“For a number of years, research organisations have struggled to either prioritise this activity or establish a model for engaging with SMEs, which emphasises the value of Mr Egan’s work.”
Andy Butler from Textor Technologies has had direct experience with Michael Egan’s achievements and commented as follows: "Textor Technologies transformation depended on the full support from Michael and his team and we will never forget the debt that we owe. The scientists or researcher may be the individual that attracts the attention, but without the back office commitment and support there would never be a project in the first place."
